Dear Colleagues, I hope you are well. We have been busy recently with a lot of patients that fly in for the day. We typically do a 2-hour appointment and put the person on specific supplements and a diet and send them back to the referring doctor for a follow-up. Often times, because of our 20 years of doing this sort of work we may be able to pick up on a few important factors that will make a difference in the patient's health. Sometimes these patients are the doctors themselves.

See the last page of the newsletter for the information on our upcoming Denver seminar, which will be May 5th in Denver at the Red Lion Hotel. We (Jay Wilson and I) will be teaching our whole protocol on treating the chronic patient. The techniques are easy to learn, very effective and do not require expensive equipment to utilize. We hope to see many of you there.

HARVEY LILLARD RETURNS

My good friend and colleague, Keith Lundberg, DC awoke a few weeks ago with the majority of hearing gone in his right ear. He had never experienced this before and was justifiably worried. This continued for a few days and then I had the opportunity to take a look. We found a positive TL to the right ear negated by inspiration and by Captomer 250 (Thorne) We treated the cranial fault but found it recurred on weight bearing and needed to be treated as a Sphenobasilar Inspiration Assist cranial fault while seated. This correction restored his hearing to even better than that on the "normal" left side and also improved his close up vision. We followed up with Captomer-250 supplementation.

We often find an interplay between metal problems, cranial faults and food sensitivities and to the get the best results they should all be addressed to minimize recidivism.

CASE HISTORY

1. Sam is a 22-year-old who spent a few months in India recently. He contracted some "unknown bug", lost 40 pounds, became tired and depressed, hurt all over, suffering from diarrhea and gastro-intestinal upset. He was only going to be home for 3 weeks. On our exam we found strong evidence suggestive of fungal, parasitic, and bacterial involvement, as well as sensitivities to wheat, corn and eggs. We supplemented with SF722 (Thorne), L. Sporogenes (Thorne) and freeze dried Hydrastis (Eclectic). When Sam returned in 2 weeks, he had stopped losing weight, no longer had gastro-intestinal disturbance, and his energy was back to normal. His food sensitivities were gone and the supplements he needed were Basic Nutrients I and Glucosamine-Chrondrotin (Thorne).

He also wasn't quite finished with the SF722. We will keep in touch through his parents to see how he is doing.

What is interesting in Sam's case was how on the 1st visit he only tested for supplements to correct his dysbiosis, while on the second visit he tested for vitamins, minerals, etc. This is not that uncommon an occurrence. One way to interpret this is his body was initially too ill or his gastrointestinal tract too compromised to handle a vitamin at that point. But once the dysbiosis was corrected the deficiency 'showed". Another possibility is the vitamin would have fed his dysbiosis instead of feeding him, so his deficiency did not show up until the dysbiosis was clear.

TIDBITS

1. If you have fairly healthy patients taking Bikram Yoga (yoga done in a 105 degree room) we find that most of them do best if they take 1 scoop of Mediclear twice daily. Most also need Thiocid or OPC. Patients who go for Bikram instructor training which is quite brutal, handle it as a rule much better than the other students, if they stay on this regimen throughout the training.

2. Most people with auto-immune type problems will show some type of dysbiosis and also metals and/or chemicals. Sometimes, the metals-chemicals will show before the dysbiosis is cleared and sometimes it is more sequential. I see this with MS, Parkinsons, Crohns, RA, etc., etc. Typically there are also food sensitivities that come and go and change periodically. It is important to monitor these patients every 2-4 weeks to make sure there is no recidivism of old findings and to do dietary and supplement modification as needed.

3. Patients have so many questions about diet - should I be careful about food combining? be on a high protein diet?, low protein diet?, etc., etc. One way to help sort it out is by food testing. For instance, on a young hypothyroid case recently - no grains strengthened a weak G-2 muscle but all high protein foods did and we modified her diet accordingly.

In some patients you will see a strong muscle weaken when you test a complex carbohydrate and high protein food simultaneously but not separately. I use foods of low allergenicity to do this test, like millet and lamb. If they weaken when tested together this might be someone who needs to be careful about food combining.

By being creative with food testing you can help a patient individualize their diet to fit their biochemical individuality.

The hypothyroid patient also weakened on cruciferous vegetables, peanuts and soy over the thyroid only and those are known in some cases to aggravate hypothyroidism.
