Dear Colleagues,

We hope you all are doing well. We had a great 25th wedding anniversary trip and I “survived” a week in a moldy condo in Florida, as well as a lot of mold exposure in Hawaii, and working in leptosporosis contaminated taro fields on Kauai without contracting anything. I will tell you more about my thoughts on this in the near future.

One of the magazines I subscribe to is called ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE. It is a lay publication, advertises many products, etc. and on occasion has an article I gain some insight from. The March 2006 issue has a good article on supplementation entitled “Gut Check” that deals with absorbability of supplements and issues of fillers, binders, excipients, etc. It is a useful article to have in your waiting room. I am not sure if they will post it on the web or not but the magazine is available in many health food stores, etc.

CASE HISTORY

John is a 68 year old man who presented in October 2005. His presenting symptoms were extreme stiffness and pain in his legs along with intermittent fevers and extreme fatigue. John had suffered from Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS)- a type of leukemia which causes the body to attack its own red blood cells. It is thus accompanied by severe anemia. He underwent two years of chemotherapy and 5 weeks of prednisone with no help. Mercks’ manual states concerning MDS “all treatments are experimental and, except in an occasional patient, ineffective.”

In 2001 he received a stem cell transplant from his brother that he said “almost killed him but also saved his life”. He has been in remission since then and off all pharmaceuticals since April 2002. Shortly after the transplant he developed what came to be diagnosed as chronic GVHD (graft vs. host disease) as a reaction to his brothers’ stem cells. According to his MD’s this was the cause of his present symptoms (this man is very wealthy and goes to the “top” MD’s he can find). Because of my successful treatment

of his daughter, a top skier, for both musculo-skeletal and biochemical issues, he decided to see me. He had a very depressed immune system also, and had contacted pneumonia 6x in the last 4 years. He was taking medicinal marijuana for the pain in his legs.

We ran our usual protocol (we were not sure what else to do) and found indications of parasitic involvement that we treated with Juglans Nigra from Eclectic (1-800-332-HERB). He also needed Glutathione (I see this in almost all cancer patients), Citramins II, and Mediclear (all by Thorne Research 1-800-228-1966).

For the past 4 months John has been symptom free for the first time in 4 years. He stays on the Mediclear, Citramins II, and Glutathione. He also has remained pneumonia free. Were the MD’s right in their diagnosis of GVHD? Was it a simple mineral deficiency or something else we corrected that made the difference? We don’t know. I often quote a sentence I attribute to Dr. George Goodheart (I am not positive he said it, but I think so): “Anything can cause anything”. I believe this statement and that is why I “fix everything I find”. Our protocol tests for lots of different variables and the more you “fix”, the better the chance your patient will get well. That is one of the beauties of AK. When we are not sure which way to proceed, our test results can yield answers that can guide us in a direction we might not have gone otherwise and yield excellent results. Of course we combine the test results with our knowledge base, patient history and results of any more traditional testing we have chosen to perform on the patient.
