Dear Colleagues, I hope you are well and having a good autumn.

There are lots of lasers on the market varying in price from $19.95 to many thousands of dollars and I've written about 3 or 4 in previous newsletters. The one I use now is a 5mW laser pen, 670 nm, small and compact. It has both continuous and pulsed modes. I have had very good success treating NL reflexes, acupuncture points, origins and insertions of muscles, etc. I used the pulsed mode almost exclusively and it works well through light clothing. Patients have also found it effective for pain control when waved over painful areas in the pulsed mode for 1-2 minutes. The price is $129.95 and is available from Mid American Marketing at 1-800- 922-1744.

CASE HISTORIES

1. Kelly is an 18-year-old college student. I treated her for chronic headaches 11/2 years ago. At that time we found a fungal problem and sensitivities to corn, onion and coffee. We desensitized and supplemented with SF722, L-tyrosine, and Basic Nutrients III. She had one year without any headaches after that. Six months ago the headaches returned but instead of coming back to me she went to an MD and was put on Inderal which just brought minor relief. After suffering for 6 months she came back. We found evidence of a bacterial problem and an egg sensitivity. We desensitized her and treated with Berbercap, Beta-Carotene and DiPan9 (all from Thorne Research). She has been headache free ever since.

Once someone has had chronic headaches - the reoccurrence of dysbiosis, food sensitivities or nutrient deficiencies can bring them back and getting them diagnosed and treated can quickly bring the patient back to being headache free.

2. Rhonda is a 47-year-old female. In 1997 we treated her for an asthmatic condition of 5 years duration. Correcting a fungal problem, some food sensitivities and nutrient deficiencies brought quick resolution and she has remained asthma free for 41/2 years.

She did return to see me 2 months ago. Over a 3-month period she had lost 30# without dieting and her blood pressure had gone from 140/80 to 190/90. Our exam showed evidence of fungal, parasitic, and bacterial involvement as well as sensitivity to nightshades. We desensitized her and supplemented with Metafem, L-Tyrosine, Ca-Mg Citrate Powder, SF722, Artecin and Berbercap (all Thorne Research 1-800-228-1966). Rhonda returned 5 weeks later. She was no longer losing weight (she had lost 6pounds the week before seeing me) and her blood pressure was now 140/80. She reported her energy was back to normal and it was the first time in a while that she was sleeping well.

I do find that in most hypertension cases finding the right balance of calcium, magnesium, and potassium will bring it down to normal. I check all 3 of the minerals in citrate and aspertate form. The Ca-Mg citrate powder often tests positive and I typically give 1/2-1 tsp twice daily telling the patient to cut back if it causes loose bowels.

3. The following was received recently from a doctor from NC that I taught and treated at our home (see page 4 for one-on-one seminars).

Dear Michael, I went to your weekend seminar over the summer. After you worked on me my back felt better. While I was driving back to Denver my lower back began to tighten. The next day it felt worse on the flight home. When I finally got back from the airport it was hurting pretty bad. I had read in one of your newsletters that you were having a lot of success with putting Captomer-250- in olive oil then applying them over the area of chief complaint. It is not the neatest procedure, but I gave it a try. After I got done rubbing the Captomer solution over my low back area my pain was immediately 90% better. It was unbelievable. I repeated applying the captomer solution over my low back area and stayed on the diet you prescribed. I felt the best I have felt in over 10 years. Thank you so much.

FYI- I recently had some free time and visited the local library. I was reading a magazine put out by the FDA. They mentioned that two antibiotics had to be recently banned from chicken feed as they were responsible for creating some fairly antibiotic resistant strains of helicobacter. They also reported that there were quite a few cases of people needing to get liver transplants and some people dying from talking the anti-fungal drug Sporanox. This especially happened when people would be on it for long periods to treat toe nail fungus. They actually also had a number of good articles linking chronic intestinal problems to food allergies. I wish they would make this info more public.

SCIENTISTS STUDY MERCURY RELEASED BY FIRES - Grand Junction Daily Sentinel Sept 5, 2001 by the Associated Press SPOKANE, Wash - Researchers who collected smoke from Washington wildfires last month have concluded that significant amounts of mercury stored in trees, plants and forest litter rise into the atmosphere when a forest burns.

Hans Friedli, a chemist for the National Center for Atmospheric Research, said that while breathing smoke is harmful in general, the airborne mercury doesn't carry an acute health hazard. Mercury in water is a problem, however, and the fallout from fires can contribute to it.

Extreme concentrations of methyl mercury from fallout, smelters and other sources can lead to advisories for children and pregnant women to limit their intake of fish and avoid health problems.

The Washington Department of Health has a long-standing health advisory for Lake Roosevelt.

Scientists estimate that about 6,500 tons of gaseous elemental mercury is circulating in the Earth's atmosphere at any given time.

About half comes from industrial sources, such as coal-fired electrical generators and trash incinerators. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 41 tons are contributed annually from coal-fired plants in the United States alone.

The other half of atmospheric mercury comes from natural sources, including volcanoes and fires.

Whatever its source, gaseous elemental mercury stays in the atmosphere for about a year, drifting over the Earth. Then it falls out, either dry or with rain.

"If it lands in water, it gets transformed into methyl mercury," Friedli said. Mercury that lands on plants is stored in the leaves or needles. When the leaves drop, the mercury is stored in forest duff and the soil, and can be carried to lakes by runoff. Friedli and his colleagues from the Colorado-based NCAR started their research at the U.S. Forest Service Fire Science Laboratory in Missoula, Mont. There, they measured the mercury in forest samples collected across the nation.

Sensors showed that nearly all the mercury became airborne when the samples burned. For his most recent sampling, Friedli and scientists from the University of Washington flew a UW plane directly into the thickest smoke plumes they could find. They flew over wildfires at Lake Chelan and near Omak, Wash. The scientists also flew over an Eastern Oregon wheat field where the farmer was burning stubble.

"We found less mercury there, which is what we expected" because agricultural fields burn more frequently than forests, Friedli said. The mercury has less time to build up between fires and harvests.

MATERIAL AVAILABLE FROM DR. MICHAEL LEBOWITZ

1. VIDEO: Correcting Chronic Health Problems 2001:This video seminar approximately 6 hours long will teach the physician a simple to apply, effective protocol to treat patients with chronic fatigue, allergies, chemical sensitivities, intestinal dysbiosis, (fungal, bacterial, parasitic, and viral infections), food sensitivities, altered intestinal permeability, toxic metal problems, endocrine dysfunction, nutritional imbalances, chronic pain and subluxation. Knowledge of basic muscle testing is helpful. A complete protocol is taught that you can start using immediately to treat even the most chronic patients. The video is suited for both the novice and the advanced practitioners in our work. A complete set of advanced notes accompanies the video. This video supercedes our previous ones and was taped at our 4/29/01 LaGuardia Seminar. The cost is $225 ppd.

2. Clinical Indications of Thorne Research Products: This handout, over 20 pages long, has both academic and clinical observations on well over 100 products I use in my office. Approximately 90% of the products I use are by Thorne Research. Reasons are given. This handout is free. Also see it on our website www.michaellebowitzdc.com

3. Personal Seminars with Dr. Lebowitz: Dr. Lebowitz teaches seminars to one or two doctors at a time in his home/office in Grand Junction, CO.
