Dear Colleagues:
We hope you are well. Jay Wilson and I will be teaching our yearly seminar on Sunday, Feb 16 in Scottsdale, AZ. Page four of this newsletter has a flyer and registration that explains the class. Scottsdale is a nice place to vacation in February and we will be holding the seminar in the same hotel the San Francisco Giants will be staying at for spring training (though possibly only the pitchers and catchers will have arrived by then). It should be a great class and we will NOT be video taping. I know Jay and I will be discussing some new ideas as well as our whole protocol to treat patients. The protocol has been taught to well over 1,000 doctors worldwide and gets great results with most health conditions. It is both simple and comprehensive and you don't need expensive equipment to utilize it.
I also thought I would mention that my friend Harvey Lang, DC is teaching a seminar in NY, Sunday, Jan 19th. I have not tried Harvey's techniques yet but he claims amazing results in treating auto-immune problems. To get more information call him at 718-773-1121
CASE HISTORY
In Newsletter 137 I talked about a fibromyalgia patient who was also diagnosed with MS in 1995 (you may want to reread the case history). She had come for 3 days and we had resolved a lot of issues and we sent her home with supplements and instructions. Three weeks after coming she reported she felt better than she had in 15 years. She just came back for a return 3 day visit approximately 2 1/2 months after the first visit. She had an 85% reduction in overall pain from the first visit. She had been without feeling in her feet for 12 years prior to her first visit. The feeling has returned! (she attributes it to our instructions to dissolve Captomer-250 in olive oil and apply it to her feet daily) She no longer has muscle spasms. We also had her on Captomer 250 orally, Basic Nutrients I, Magnesium Citramate and Glutathione (all Thorne Research 1-800-228-1966).
She maintained daily bowel movements (previously they had been once weekly). Under her doctor's supervision she was able to go off Neurontin, Norgesic Forte, Bextra, Clarinex, and Minocyclene.
On her second trip out we found that despite the near miraculous improvement her fungal, bacterial, and viral problems had returned (SF722, Berbercap, and Arabinex were
indicated). Copper and mercury were still positive. The main symptom that had returned was fatigue which was probably fungal related.
Her husband, who we just took a quick look at the first time out was given Captomer-250 and Basic Nutrients I at that time. On the return he told us he hadn't had feeling on the side of his head for 2 years and the doctors did not have a clue; but the Captomer-250 resolved it and as well as the snoring problems he had.
This time he wanted a complete exam due to chronic insomnia and chronic acid reflux. We found the same microbial issues his wife had as well as a need for Magnesium Citrate, 5-Hydroxy-Tryptophan, Thiocid, Basic Nutrients I and Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate (all Thorne). By the time they left, his acid reflex was gone and he will report back soon on how the rest goes.
Definitely not all MS/Fibromyalgia cases respond as positively so quickly. This has been a very gratifying case.

Study Records Elevated Mercury Levels in Fish Consumers By Sharon L. Crenson The Associated Press
BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A study of Californians who loaded their lunch and dinner menus with fish shows 89 percent wound up with elevated mercury levels in their bodies.
The research, presented Saturday by San Francisco internist Dr. Jane Hightower at a symposium of environmental health experts in Vermont, is one of the first studies to document mercury levels in Americans who eat more fish than the Environmental Protection Agency recommends.
Doctors are increasingly interested in the possible risks of eating too much mercury-tainted fish, and the Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration are trying to better inform the public about the subject.
It is a thorny problem because of the widely recognized benefits of fish, a high quality protein source loaded with heart-protecting Omega 3 fatty acids.
Conference participants didn't seem too worried about the findings: The majority ordered salmon for dinner Saturday.
"We are not talking about whether or not to eat fish," said the EPA's Kathryn Mahaffey, one of the conference organizers.
Hightower screened 720 patients from March 2000 to March 2001, then tested the mercury levels of patients who reported eating more than two servings of fish a week. That's the maximum the EPA recommends for pregnant women and small children.
The tests showed that of 116 patients who had their blood tested, 89 percent showed mercury levels greater than the 5 parts per million recognized as safe by the National Academy of Sciences.
Of that group, 63 people had blood mercury levels more than twice the recommended level and 19 showed blood mercury levels four times the level considered safe. Four people had mercury levels 10 times as high as the government recommends.
The peer-reviewed study is slated for publication Nov. 1 in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.
The study monitored 67 patients as they reduced their fish intake and subsequently their bodies' mercury levels. Within 41 weeks, all but two had reduced their blood mercury levels to below government-recommended thresholds, according to Hightower.
The study did not address physical symptoms such as fatigue or memory loss associated with mercury poisoning. Some patients did report such problems, but Hightower's study did not seek to correlate symptoms with mercury levels.
Still, Alan Stern, a New Jersey public health official at the conference, said any mercury study focusing on people who eat a lot of fish is a sort of "holy grail" for the field. Too much mercury damages the nervous system, especially in children and fetuses, but scientists are not certain how much mercury-tainted fish is needed to trigger health problems.
The FDA currently recommends that pregnant women and young children limit their fish intake to two 6-ounce cans of tuna per week if it's the only fish they eat, and to one can per week if they also eat other fish. The agency says they should not eat any swordfish, shark, king mackerel or tilefish.
About 78 percent of patients with high mercury levels reported eating canned tuna more than three times a month; 74 percent ate salmon more than four times a month; and 72 percent said they had swordfish more than once a month. Other fish commonly eaten by the patients included halibut, ahi, sea bass and sushi.
Hightower recommended that doctors concerned about patients' mercury exposure take dietary histories including fish consumption to help identify people at risk of accumulating too much mercury.
She also recommended that state and federal government agencies make the results of mercury testing in fish available wherever fish are sold, along with the details of consumption advisories.
Mercury is a naturally occurring element that makes its way into the environment when oil-and coal-fired power plants burn those fossil fuels. Rain washes it into waterways, where it settles and is eaten by microorganisms, which are eaten by fish.
The Vermont conference was organized by the American Fisheries Society and the EPA. Dr. Lebowitz note: I have found that I have to have all my chronic mercury cases avoid the ingestion of fish and seaweed or they will re-develop mercury symptoms very quickly. Recently I have found a sliced smoked salmon from Tasmania that appears to be OK but only time will tell.
