Dear Colleagues,
I hope you all are well. I pray that during this upcoming holiday season we all realize how thankful we should be for what we have. My son Noah recently got to be the batboy at the Olympic Qualifying Event in Phoenix, AZ. The six countries participating were the US, Canada, Mexico, Panama, Guatemala and Nicaragua. Of course the US and Canada had all the latest equipment and each player had an unlimited supply of bats, cleats etc. The Nicaragua team had 4 bats for the whole team. It was a good lesson for Noah to realize what an abundance we have and to share that abundance.
NEW PRODUCTS OF THE MONTH
1. L-Tryptophan (Thorne Research 1-800-228-1966). I am happy to report that Thorne Research now has L-Tryptophan available again. As we know tryptophan is a precursor for both melatonin and serotonin and can be used very successfully in anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, depression, obesity, carbohydrate craving, headaches, fibromyalgia, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease etc. It can also increase levels of endorphins, dopamine, and norepinephrine. Some patients do better on 5-HTP while some prefer L-Tryptophan. It is thought that when taking 5-HTP some people convert it to serotonin before it crosses the blood-brain barrier and in these patients taking L-Tryptophan is preferred. Muscle testing can help you determine which is best on a given patient. I usually give it not with food and in most cases I give it in the evening and before bed. If patients are on serotonin re-uptake inhibitors you should be cautious in prescribing L-Tryptophan as it could lead to a serotonin excess. Properly done, it can often be a better alternative than the serotonin re-uptake inhibitors and can substitute for them (under an MD’s supervision). Dr. Elva Edwards sent me this interesting NY Times article on serotonin (disregard the allopathic bias in it).

In the Turkey, a Hope for Autoimmune Disorders By Sandra Blakeslee
A substance found in many foods, including turkey, can suppress an overactive immune system, researchers are reporting. The substance, tryptophan, produces a breakdown product in the body that, in the study, reversed paralysis in mice with an experimental form of multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune disorder that attacks the fatty cells that insulate neurons.
"I have always been a skeptic regarding the interaction of diet and immunity," said Dr. Lawrence Steinman, the chairman of the immunology program at Stanford, who led the study, published in Science last week. "But now I'm getting smacked in the head by my own research.
"Dr. Marc Feldmann, a professor of medicine at Imperial College London and an authority on autoimmune disorders, called the study "very interesting and quite encouraging." But he said the next step, and a very large one, was to find out if the treatment is safe for humans.
Tryptophan is one of 20 building blocks, called amino acids, that the body uses to construct proteins. But unlike many other amino acids, tryptophan is not made by the body, and it must be gotten from foods. Once tryptophan is consumed, it breaks down via different metabolic pathways to form a huge number of proteins and hormones, including serotonin, which elevates mood, and melatonin, which promotes sleep - a partial explanation for the nap that often follows Thanksgiving dinner. Tryptophan also helps make an essential vitamin, niacin.
Yet another breakdown pathway of tryptophan produces compounds called kynurenines, which have been shown to suppress the immune response in pregnant animals, Dr. Steinman said. Kynurenines bear a remarkable resemblance in chemical structure to a drug called Tranilast, sold in Japan to treat allergies. When the Stanford researchers gave the drug, as well as pure kynurenines, to mice with a form of multiple sclerosis, inflammation was drastically reduced. The mice regained neurological function.
An evolutionary explanation may exist for the suppressed immunity that results from some breakdown products of tryptophan, Dr. Steinman said. When people are starving, they need to preserve essential functions of the brain and heart. Without food and with little or no tryptophan to make proteins, kynurenines tend to build up and turn off the immune system, thus helping the starving person to survive.
In a recent clinical trial to treat inflammation of blood vessels, Tranilast proved to be very safe, Dr. Steinman said. The drug is now licensed by an Australian company, Angiogen, for use in autoimmune diseases.
Dr. Steinman said he hoped to create some kind of joint venture with Angiogen to test Tranilast in people with multiple sclerosis. The drug is also being tested in Britain to treat arthritis, he said. He added that people often asked if they should eat a lot of turkey or buy tryptophan pills to treat autoimmune disorders, "but it probably won't help unless you are starving to death," he said. "A drug is also being tested in Britain to treat arthritis, he said. "A drug that works on the right pathways should be more effective."
2. AK Test Kits (1-888-323-0625) has made some additions this month. We have added 2 vials to the vaccine kit. One is the “5 in one vaccine” and the 2nd is a composite vial for all the vaccines in the kit. If you already have the kit you may want to order just these 2 vials as an update. For people that do not have the kit, all orders of the vaccine kit will now include these new additions. We also have a new test kit available called the Fragrance Kit. It has 27 vials of components of perfumes and other personal care products. It includes items such as Benzaldehyde, Allantoin, Terpinene, etc. For a complete listing of all 27 vials and what they are components of visit our website http://www.michaellebowitzdc.com
CASE HISTORY
This was submitted by Stefan Frank who practices in Sweden and has been using our protocols for a number of years
A SHORT CASE HISTORY:
Jarek is a polish building worker who presented a severe pain in
lower abdominal, spreading back toward the lower back. These symptoms
had been going on for some weeks and now It was so bad that he was
unable to do his work, and it was worsening since the last two weeks.
He barely could stand upright. Due to economical issues he asked me
for as cheap a treatment as possible. We found parasites and bacteria
which was negated with Artecin and Berbercap (Thorne 1-800-228-1966).
He also tested good with Buffered C Powder. We desensitized and
supplemented. When I met him two days later (in a different context)
he told me that the pain was completely gone.
OFFICE CLOSED
It is very rare than we close are office and take a “real” vacation where no work is involved. In early 2006 my wife Cynthia and I will celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary and be taking a vacation back to where we met, lived and were married: Kauai. As a result the office will be closed for 2 weeks Dec 24th-Jan 8th. You can still place test kit orders and ask questions about products etc by emailing us or calling our office (970-257-0311). Leave your number and we will get back to you. The next newsletter should come in early-mid January. Have a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year!
