Dear Colleagues
I hope you all are well and enjoying the summer. We have been busy working on some new products that we hope to speak about in the coming months (one hopefully in the next newsletter) as well as with my practice, visiting docs, and a host of other activities.
This is the 200th issue of this newsletter. I am amazed it has been going this long and has grown to about 1300 active physician subscribers. I would like to thank all of you that have contributed materials, correspondence etc. over the years. I hope it has been helpful to you all.
I picked up a new professional baseball player patient back in May. At the time he was in AAA and batting .234. We did a lot of structural work and supplemented him with fairly usual supplements that I give professional athletes- Thorne’s (1-800-228-1966) L-Tyrosine, Basic Nutrients III, and
L-Carnitine; Pro Omega from Nordic Naturals; and TheraSupreme from Supreme Nutrition (1-800-922-1744). Over the next 6 weeks he raised his batting average from .234 to.308 and was recently called up to the Houston Astros where he is presently batting .333. It could all be coincidence but the fact that every ballplayer we are working on has raised his average from the previous year as well as moved up in ranking from when the 2008 season began seems to take it out of the coincidence possibility. For me it is a lot of fun.
Case History
1. Marla is a 36 year old interior designer. She first came in 4 months ago with presenting complaints of allergies, asthma, frequent recurrent sinus infections, migraines, and depression. She was on 7 prescription medications including a steroid inhaler. Doing our protocol she weakened on
the following composite vials (AK Test Kits 1-888-323-0625) Bacteria, Fungus, Rickettsia, Chlamydia as well as chicken and bakers yeast. We desensitized her, took her off the 2 foods plus refined sweetening and fermented foods for a period of 14 days and supplemented with Morinda Supreme (it blocked all 4 composite vials for microbes separately and together) and Thera Supreme (1-800-922-1744) as well as Basic B Complex, Biomins II, and L-Tyrosine by Thorne (1-800-228-1966). We did a recheck 14 days later where we basically did some structural corrections and found she needed to stay on all the supplements except Morinda. The composites now all tested negative. I then didn’t see her for 3 more months due to our busy schedules. She then returned and reported that she hasn’t felt this good in over a decade. Her migraines were gone, sinus problems were gone too and she had gone off 4 prescription medicines (with doctors approval). We made some minor adjustments and will continue to monitor her. In Marla’s case it would have been more ideal not to have let 3 months lapse between the 2nd and 3rd visit and even though the results were excellent- I think she would have responded even more quickly if she hadn’t been on nasal steroids to start. Sometimes being on steroids either oral or nasal will sabotage a patient from getting over dysbiosis.
Tidbits
1. Some patients do not tolerate fish oils very well despite being deficient in omega-3’s. In fact many of them don’t do well on any refined oils including flax. In these patients we have found that eating chia seeds daily as well as switching to grass fed meat does a good job of supplementation.
2. I have mentioned this before but it is easy to get false negatives doing food testing with AK for a variety of reasons. I estimate that even with the best of techniques, the false negatives in food testing runs about 10%. Similarly, smokers most often do not weaken when tested on tobacco. On foods (or tobacco) you suspect they are sensitive to (especially gluten containing foods) that do not show on testing, have the patient avoid the food for a week and then have them eat a “large” portion of it 6-18 hours before their appointment and then test the food. Some items will only show that way and it is similar to the clinical ecologists concept of “unmasking”.
3. It is critical to recheck the patient’s supplementation each visit. It is a common occurrence that I get a referral from an excellent AK doc and the patient weakens on the majority of their supplementation. On questioning the patient I find the supplements haven’t been rechecked in months and that is part of the reason for their present symptoms.

3. Personal Seminars with Dr. Lebowitz: Dr. Lebowitz teaches seminars to one or two doctors at a time in his home/office in Grand Junction, CO.
