Dear Colleagues
I hope you all are well. It was great seeing some of you at the recent ICAK conference in Dallas. The annual ICAK meetings are an extra-ordinary opportunity to spend time schmoozing with “the masters” of AK and learning from them above and beyond the great presentations that also occur. It is an opportunity that should not be missed. Plan to come next year.
We have redone the last page of the newsletter to reflect new available materials, etc. and we hope some of you take advantage of our personalized seminars in both Grand Junction, CO and Honolulu, HI this year. We are having some technical difficulties reproducing our 2012 LA seminar DVD and will send an announcement as soon as it is ready. I truly feel it is our best seminar to date and the DVD will be the best quality to date- just a few kinks to work out.
Clinical Tidbits Sheet
Even though I check all patients for the basics: dysbiosis, metals, foods, etc., there are certain things I may check for specific conditions that either I personally discovered or they were shared with me by other docs over the years. My son asked me to compile some of these. If you go to my website, www.michaellebowitzdc.com click on the left where it says Clinical Tidbits. You can read it or print it if you find it useful.
New Product
Manjistha Supreme (Supreme Nutrition 1-800-922-1744)
Manjistha Supreme is a plant medicine derived from the roots of Rubia cordifolia. Manjistha grows in Southeast Asia, China, tropical Africa, and India. It contains a variety of quinones, iridoid glycosides, triterpinoids, and Beta-sitosterol.
Research has shown its efficacy as an antioxidant, muscle relaxer, anti-seizure, and anti-anxiety remedy. The herb has also been shown to be an immune stimulant; one trial demonstrated an increase in white blood cells by 151%.
Manjistha is a supreme Lymphatic tonic. It has a long history of being used in India to treat disorders of the lymphatics. Often patients with fungal dysbiosis and/or mercury toxicity have problems with lymphatic drainage; Manjistha works well with these patients to clear the problems and enhance circulation. Manjistha is also very anti-inflammatory for musculoskeletal problems and has been used historically to treat anything from bumps and bruises to rheumatoid arthritis. It has been used in cases of inflammatory digestive problems such as Peptic Ulcer, Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative colitis. There is some good research on Manjistha preventing serious allergic reactions to foods and it is it used for inflammatory skin conditions like acne, vitiligo, and eczema. Manjistha may also be very useful in excessive-bleeding conditions like heavy menses, nosebleeds, and bleeding from trauma.
Manjistha seems to be very well absorbed in the GI leading us to think of it loosely as a more bio-available version of Turmeric (though a different plant).
Manjistha is considered to be the most renowned blood-detoxifying herb in Ayurveda. Manjistha has been used traditionally as a liver and kidney detoxifier. Manjistha also seems to be quite useful in treating anxiety. This action may be in part due to its ability to raise dopamine levels. It may prove a good substitute for the amino acid L-Tyrosine as we prefer whole herbs to pharmaceutical nutrients. Historically it was used to help dissolve tumors as well as help broken bones to heal. As an antimicrobial, Manjistha has shown activity against bacteria as well as against viruses, particularly HIV virus. Additionally, Manjistha has been shown to have significant antioxidant activity. Manjistha has also been demonstrated to have antitumor activity in one study.
Like most of Supreme Nutrition products the broad spectrum applications of this herb are very impressive. We tend to think of it mostly as a lymphatic drainer and an anti-inflammatory for the musculo-skeletal and gastro-intestinal systems as well as an anti-anxiety herb and kidney detoxifier, but we test it on everyone because of the other applications too. The herb is very safe. Manjistha was traditionally given to women with threatened abortion up until the last trimester of pregnancy, and so is generally considered safe in pregnancy. The toxic dose has been found via research in rats to be above 175g/kg. It is generally recommended not to exceed 30 grams per day.
Recommended dose- 2 caps twice daily
*it should be noted that Manjistha may temporarily turn urine orange or brown.

Letter from a patient
Dr Lebowitz,
I wanted to tell you how the weightlifting meet went last weekend. I snatched 120kg which is a 8kg personal best. I clean and jerked 140kg which is a 5kg personal best. And I was able to clean 145kg twice but I missed the jerk both times. The reason that I am telling you this is because I know without a doubt that it wouldn't have been possible without your help. So THANK YOU for everything!
Jack

A pair of new scientific studies suggest that poultry on factory farms are routinely fed caffeine, active ingredients of Tylenol and Benadryl, banned antibiotics and even arsenic. It turns out that arsenic has routinely been fed to poultry (and sometimes hogs) because it reduces infections and makes flesh an appetizing shade of pink. The same study also found that one- third of feather-meal samples contained an antihistamine that is the active ingredient of Benadryl. And feather-meal samples from China contained an antidepressant that is the active ingredient in Prozac. Researchers found that most feather-meal samples contained caffeine. It turns out that chickens are sometimes fed coffee pulp and green tea powder to keep them awake so that they can spend more time eating. The other peer-reviewed study found arsenic in every sample of feather meal tested. Almost 9 in 10 broiler chickens in the United States had been fed arsenic.

Dr L’s comments: Most of us know that if you are eating meat: grass fed meat, organic free range chickens and wild caught fish is the way to go due to preferred fatty acid profiles in those animals. This is another compelling reason to make those choices.
One great tidbit from Wally Schmitt at the ICAK meeting is that using raw sesame oil helps discourage the conversion of most omega 6 oils into arachodonic acid- so it might be a preferred oil to use in dressings, etc.

5. Body Restoration An Owners Manual An updated and expanded version of my first book Body Mechanics published almost 30 years ago. Part 1 has a chapter on each organ/gland. Each chapter teaches basic anatomy and physiology, causes and symptoms of dysfunction, as well as simple treatments your patient can do at home to complement your treatment. Part 2 explains the role of dysbiosis, food intolerances, toxic metals, nutritional deficiencies and neurotransmitter imbalances in health.
The book is a great review for the doctor, but better yet it is a great tool to sell to your patient. It will give them a better understanding of how their body works and the causes of health and disease, as well as the rationale of why you treat the way you do. It is very pro chiropractic.
