1. Lectin Protect (Supreme Nutrition 1-800-922-1744)
The issue of lectins has become more well know recently due to the work of Steven Gundry MD and others. For your chronic patient lowering the lectin load in the diet as well as taking lectin binding agents can make major shifts in your patients’ health. I have found dealing with lectin issues to be a very important addition to our technique.
Lectins are carbohydrate binding proteins found in your foods. Though they probably exist in all foods to some extent, they are highest in beans, grains, grain and bean fed animal products, nuts and seeds, and nightshades.
Lectins are resistant to breakdown by the body’s digestive enzymes and to most methods of cooking. Eating them in excess or even in small amounts in susceptible people can contribute to a myriad of health problems (especially in patients with dysbiosis and/or food sensitivities).
They are a major contributor to increased intestinal permeability (“leaky gut”) (1). As a result of leaky gut they can enter the bloodstream, react with antibodies and lead to various autoimmune “diseases” depending on your weakened areas, genetics, etc. One study showed specifically how they interact with enterocytes and lymphocytes, leading to antigenic stimulation, and cause the expression of rheumatoid arthritis (2). They can also make your body more prone to dysbiosis.
Many lectins are toxic to the nervous system, immune system, etc. Some like the lectins in raw kidney beans can lead to death. Hypercoagulation, and endocrine disruption are other possible side effects of eating lectins.
Dr. Gundry has stated in his book Plant Paradox that lectin reduction in his practice has helped such diverse conditions as arthritis, chronic fatigue, dementia, depression, heart disease, diabetes, migraines, PCOS, obesity, etc., etc., etc.
Avoiding all lectins is impossible but it is advisable to decrease your exposure significantly.
There are a few lectin binding protects on the market. We decided to look at the research and buy samples of all the whole natural substances that appear to have lectin binding properties and with blind applied kinesiology testing find out which ones perform the best. We have done that and as a result have come out with the product Lectin Protect. We always feel that the simpler the product is the better. Lectin Protect has three ingredients: Bladderwrack, Okra, and Larch bark.
1) Bladderwrack (fucus vesiculosus) contains fucose sugars, whose mucilaginous properties appear to bind to harmful lectins and eliminate them from the body (3, 4, 5). It can also help eliminate pathogenic organisms from the gastrointestinal tract (6).
2) Okra has similar properties and can bind lectins in food as well as those already attached to various receptor sites. One study showed that Okra bound up to 80% of certain types of lectins (7).
3) Larch bark is naturally high in arabinogalactans and can help bind not only lectins but block lectin binding sites in the body (8, 9). Arabinogalactans have also been to help protect one against the common cold and stimulate the immune system to fight off infections (10, 11).
Test Vial: Supreme Nutrition is also offering a free “Master Lectin” test vial (from AK Test Kits) if you order 12 bottles of Lectin Protect. For people not ordering 12 you can still order a “Master Lectin” test vial by calling 800-922-1744. As usual with any order of a new product (Lectin Protect in this case) you will get a free test vial of the product (Lectin Protect).
With AK analysis Lectins will often cause inhibition of a strong indicator muscle though on occasion it only will inhibit a TFL. We found that almost 80% of our patients weaken on the “Master Lectin” screening vial.
Contraindications for Lectin Protect:
Consult your physician if you have a bleeding disorder, hyperthyroidism, are
pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or have had an organ transplant.
Recommended dosage:
2 capsules 3x per day for the first bottle, with meals. After that take 2 with each
meal that contains higher lectin foods (beans, grains, nightshades, seeds, and
grain fed animal products)
2. TAKESUMI IN CAPSULES! (Supreme Nutrition 1-800-922-1744). Takesumi Supreme for a decade has been one of the leading detoxification products in the alternative health community. Being much more adsorbent than regular activated charcoal, we use it to remove toxic metals, chemicals, mycotoxins etc. from the body as well as helping to quench inflammatory reactions, food reactions etc. Supreme Nutrition is a purist and we have a policy of never using additives, fillers, binders, etc. This continues to be very challenging since more and more herbs are sprayed extracts onto maltodextrin and most encapsulation companies use stearic acid (including magnesium, and calcium stearate), ascorbyl palmitate, or leucine as a flow agent (this speeds the encapsulation process and saves money for the company but may decrease absorption). Because of its light density, our encapsulation companies originally said takesumi could not be encapsulated without a filler such as rice flour. After many years and advances in production methods, they now were able to do it- takesumi capsules with nothing else added, just pure takesumi. Since we occasionally have people who do not like the “hassle” of using the powder, we have decided to make takesumi available both ways- powder and caps. Of course the powder is more cost effective so you can let your patient decide which they prefer. It is a 90 cap bottle (3 capsules equals’ two scoops). We will also be providing test vials for each (powder and capsule) since the capsule is another variable in the test plus we have two suppliers of takesumi powder (the 2 supplies test similarly over 95% of the time but differently on occasion).
Testimonial from Virginia Shapiro DC
Lectin avoidance in a 29 year old male.
In early May, 2017, I referred a patient of mine to Dr. Michael Lebowitz for a second opinion. The patient, whom I’ll call, “Nick,” has had a long history of physical and emotional challenges, despite living a very healthy lifestyle and having had excellent and detailed functional medicine and AK chiropractic care, provided by a variety of skilled practitioners. His symptoms included: Asperger syndrome; mood instability including depression, anxiety, and emotional volatility; brain fog; insomnia; eczema; fatigue; chemical and food sensitivities; and poor motivation.
At the time of the referral, he was eating a very high quality, gluten-free, dairy-free, all organic, nutrient-dense diet, with reasonable levels of outdoor physical exercise, yoga, and meditation. He had been following this regime for years with some variation; and it had helped him a great deal; although he was still struggling with the above challenges. Dr. Lebowitz identified a few issues; but the most compelling issue for Nick was lectin intolerance. Upon Dr. Lebowitz’s recommendation, Nick immediately went on a low lectin diet; and his response was extraordinary. His lifelong emotional volatility and mood instability dramatically improved, his brain fog cleared, his sleep normalized (for the first time in years), his motivation and ability to initiate and complete projects significantly improved, his skin cleared, he experienced more consistent energy, and over time, foods that he previously reacted to with eczema or brain fog, did not produce any apparent reaction. Most liberating for him was that he was, for the first time in his life, able to gracefully navigate challenging social interactions that previously would have triggered a strong emotional reaction in him. Because the low lectin diet is very restrictive and eliminates a number of healthful foods, Nick has recently experimented with loosening up his diet somewhat, and has used the new Supreme Nutritionals product, “Lectin Protect,” when he eats meals including higher lectin foods. He continues to do very well with this approach.

4. Body Restoration An Owners Manual - An updated and expanded version of my first book Body Mechanics published almost 30 years ago. Part 1 has a chapter on each organ/gland. Each chapter teaches basic anatomy and physiology, causes and symptoms of dysfunction, as well as simple treatments your patient can do at home to complement your treatment. Part 2 explains the role of dysbiosis, food intolerances, toxic metals, nutritional deficiencies and neurotransmitter imbalances in health. The book is a great review for the doctor, but better yet it is a great tool to recommend to your patient. It will give them a better understanding of how their body works and the causes of health and disease, as well as the rationale of why you treat the way you do. It is very pro chiropractic. It is available for $1.99 on kindle at http://www.amazon.com/Body-Restoration-Owners-Manual-ebook/dp/B0050653C4/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1353354004&sr=1-1 or in paperback http://www.amazon.com/body-restoration-Dr-Michael-Lebowitz/dp/146100294X/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1432251114&sr=8-2&keywords=michael+lebowitz+kapadia
5. Body Restoration Cookbook - This companion volume to the above book was written by Cynthia Lebowitz and is now available free online (donations accepted). A wonderful tool for your patients as it contains almost 100 recipes- most without gluten, dairy, nightshades, etc. http://www.bodyrestorationanownersmanual.com/html/Cookbook.html
6. God’s Preventative Medicine- my latest book is now available in paperback. It explains how the Levitical Priests dealt with fungal dysbiosis both preventatively and treatment wise as well as the reasons behind some of the other health laws of the Torah. It is a short easy to understand book and fascinating for the student of health and the Bible http://www.amazon.com/Gods-Preventative-Medicine-Discoveries-Instructions/dp/150892824X/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1432251151&sr=1-2
