It seems like the media more and more is reporting on toxic metal and fungal problems. The Denver Post, on 1/13/01 reported that the FDA said pregnant women should not eat shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tile fish - because the mercury in them could hurt an unborn baby's developing brain. Other fish should be limited to 12 oz weekly, 6 oz if locally caught (as opposed to commercial) according to the FDA.
In our practice, if patient shows positive to mercury we have them avoid all fish, shellfish, and seaweed until it, mercury, no longer tests positive as we feel all of these have some level of contamination. A dentist we met recently was telling us that back when dentist mixed amalgams by hand - that most dentists developed some degree of tremor after a few decades of practice (though he assured me it was perfectly safe to place in a patient's mouth).
Another article in a recent L A Times was sent by my friend Benny Rinaldo DC. This article is about tenants of rental apartments developing severe fungal problems from inhaling mold in their rental apartments (one had 16 fungal masses found in her lungs, the largest being golf ball size). It mentions how a 1999 Mayo clinic study we previously reported on found that nearly all of the 37,000,000 Americans suffering from chronic sinus problems have them because of mold/fungus. Presently about 100 court cases in California alone are due to toxic mold exposure. We have been teaching this for years and if we suspect it from our case history we have patients bring in air samples from their home and work place for testing.
CASE HISTORIES
1. Mike, a 33-year-old hospital orderly presented with constant severe sinusitis every winter and spring with debilitating facial pain. He was severely fatigued needing 12 hours sleep daily. Antibiotics would bring minor relief.
We found evidence of fungal and bacterial issues as well as sensitivities to dairy and wheat. We desensitized him, placed him on an appropriate diet and supplemented with SF722 and Berbercap (Thorne Research).
Two weeks later Mike's mother called. She said that she had tried her best to discourage Mike from coming to see me and had been successful for a year. Now she said it was like "a miracle cure" and she wanted to make and appointment for herself!
Mike came back in 3 weeks with no sinus or facial pain and a normal energy level. He said he now only needed 6 hours sleep per night. We found no obvious sign of fungal or bacterial involvement. He needed Biomins II (Thorne) as a supplement and we reintroduced foods that were positive on the first visit. He continues to do well.
Occasionally we get patients like Mike who test for no vitamins or minerals on the first visit -just supplements to correct dysbiosis. Often their systems are too compromised to assimilate well and their bodies are saying 'kill the bug first'. Once the dysbiosis is corrected they then test for vitamins and or minerals as in Mike's case above.
2. Submitted by Natalie Liesman, DC Janet was 8 weeks old when her parents brought her to the office. She weighed 8 lbs., 8 oz and had gained only 1 lb., 5 oz from her initial birth weight. She had not received any vaccinations. She had started gaining weight more regularly when the mother supplemented her nursing with raw goat milk, but then her weight remained constant again. In the two weeks prior to the visit, Janet was having 9-10 diarrhea diapers a day.
Examination revealed an apparently healthy alert, although tiny baby girl. Using surrogate testing with Janet's mother, we found a need for Juglan's Artemesia compound (Eclectic). Janet and her family were all reacting to the goat's milk, which the family brought with them. Juglans-Artemesia, negated the goat milk reaction. Janet was also sensitive to dairy, alfalfa, spinach, honey, and coffee. Her mother tested sensitive to dairy, spinach, honey, yeast, walnuts and raspberry. We had Janet's mother avoid all the foods to which they were both sensitive, and supplemented Janet with Juglans-Artemesia 1-2 drops, three times per day. We also adjusted Janet using a percussion instrument and treated cranial bone dysfunction using Cranial-Sacral techniques.
Follow up two days later revealed no increase in weight. Janet had reacted to soymilk as a supplement to mother's milk. The mother was going to begin Fenugreek supplementation to increase her milk supply. Janet tested positively on powdered goat milk that the mother wished to use to supplement. Janet was adjusted and cranial work performed.
A visit one-week later resulted in a 1oz. weight gain. She was still having diarrhea. The mother reported that a lactation consultant had found that Janet was not latching on properly while nursing so her suck was not as effective. Janet still tested as needing Juglans-Artemesia. Janet was adjusted and cranial work was performed. TMJ evaluation revealed a tight L masseter muscle. After working the muscle, her mouth opened farther. The mother was shown how to treat the masseter and temporalis muscles with spindle cell and origin insertion work for home follow up.
A phone call two months later revealed that Janet continued to gain weight steadily (she weighed 12 lbs., 4 oz) and the diarrhea did not return
