Dear Colleagues, I hope you are all doing well. At least here in Western Colorado, I have seen more cases of parasites recently then I have in a long time. Many people seem to have contracted them from restaurants. Others from contact with irrigation water or unwashed produce, and still others it is actually in their plumbing. This can be especially true in old plumbing after vacations when water sits stagnant in the pipes for long periods. Also, in homes which have whole house filters -when you leave on vacation make sure you turn on the filter by pass so chlorinated water sits in your pipes (as a preventative) and switch back to filtered water when you return.
PRODUCT OF THE MONTH
1. MediClear (Thorne Research 1 800-228-1966) - This is Thorne's version of a non- dairy based meal replacement, hypo-allergenic diet formula, fasting drink, etc. As many of you know, I treat some extremely sensitive/allergv patients. MediClear appears to be well tolerated by many of these patients (including myself). I personally use it as a breakfast drink and all round nutrient supplement and my family will add it to smoothies for extra supplementation. It tastes good, mixes well, and is reasonably priced. It has no rice syrup solids. Just like Thorne's other products the minerals are in highly available forms you don't see in similar products (picolinates, citrate-malate, ultra-chrome, etc.). Vitamins include activated forms of B (R-5-P, P-5-P), methylcobalamin. There are some amino acids, antioxidants, EFA's etc. Read the label for yourself. This is definitely my favorite new supplement of the year so far.
CASE HISTORIES
1. Debra is a 47-year-old who has suffered from frequent sinus infections and nosebleeds for 10+ years and was taking Allegra, HCTZ, and Prozac all for 10 years as well as synthroid for 25 years. She also complained of low energy, depression, anger and a rash on her back of long standing duration and was 30 pounds overweight.
On her first exam we found the following indications of fungal involvement, sensitivities to egg, dairy, garlic, wheat, flax, and pintos. We desensitized her and rescheduled her for 3 weeks later. With our protocol it typically takes 3 weeks to clear dysbiosis if we run into no complications (infected spouse or partner, mold in home, etc.). I think it is equally legitimate to have return weekly for adjustments, NL work, etc., but my schedule is too busy to allow that.
Three weeks later she returned and had lost 8 pounds - her energy and disposition had greatly improved, as had her sinus problems. Only her rash showed no improvement. She tested like we could re-introduce all the foods except wheat and we needed to keep her on Basic Nutrients and Tyrosine.
For the next 5 months Debra refilled her nutrients. Things were going well and she felt she did not need treatment. She lost 27 pounds. Then in one weekend she gained 5 pounds for no apparent reason so she scheduled. We found she had developed sensitivities to beef, dairy, oat, broccoli and pineapple but otherwise all was OK. We desensitized her and sent her home. She is now again making steady progress.
On occasion you see, like in Debra's case, that some unknown variable (trauma, emotional stress, metals, chemical or microbe exposure) will "blow her circuits" so to speak. People then develop multiple sensitivities etc. and then just need some good basic desensitization work, NL's, etc. to get things back on tract. It is more typical when she suddenly regained 5 pounds to see dysbiosis recur though that did not happen in her case.
2. Ruth, an 80-year-old woman has suffered from diarrhea for 2 months duration. Her gastro-enterologist did a colonoscopy and biopsy - both proving negative. She was put on 2 rounds of Cipro and Flagyl, which helped marginally for 2 days only. She suffered from bilateral abdominal pain and had lost 20 pounds.
On testing we found the need for Artecin and Berbercap as well as Glutathione and a sensitivity to potato which we had her avoid. She called today to report that she has no longer had diarrhea. This is a case where good AK testing and herbs proved superior to pharmaceuticals that are prescribed for similar microbes.
3. Nina, a 40-year-old came in with severe pain from the lumbars down to the coccyx. We found numerous muscle weaknesses ( coccygeus, multifidis, gracilus, piriformis, etc.).
There was not trauma. Treatment by myself and other physicians over 2 1/2 months brought only marginal temporary relief. I decided to do a whole workup and we found sensitivities to dairy, chicken, and tomato. Mercury tested positive and copper did over
the symptomatic area only. We supplemented with Thiocid and TraceMins, which gave some relief. On the next visit she tested for Captomer-250. Supplementation with it brought sudden complete remission of the symptoms as well as a great mellowing of her disposition. She needed 2 bottles of it over 3 months (2 daily) and then was able to go off of it for 4 months when she started to get her symptoms back. Re-supplementing with Captomer-250 has taken care of it. This is a case of heavy metals causing nerve irritation and pain that could be mistaken for a straight musculo-skeletal injury. She had previously been a heavy fish and seaweed eater, of which she now remains off.
4. I just received this letter in yesterdays mail:
"Dear Dr. Lebowitz, Thank you for being so knowledgeable in your field. Robbi and I tried several pediatricians and many more remedies to try and help Alexandra work through her bowel problems. Not one of the remedies was successful - and yet with one evaluation you were able to determine the problem and offer a solution that worked! Thank you."
Alexandra, a one-year-old had "chronic constipation". Even avoiding dairy did not help.
We found fungal problems and chicken, dairy and wheat sensitivities. Treating those is what succeeded.
FYI
Whenever I do not see fungal problems clear in 3 weeks I have them bring in air samples from around their house, work, car, etc. as well as their partner (or at least a saliva sample from them) and any other sample of a suspected source of exposure. I find if the same anti-fungal still tests effective there is typically a source of re-infection that if found and dealt with will yield great results. Neglecting to discern the source of exposure will yield less than optimal results and sometimes no results at all.
