Dear Colleagues:

I hope you all are well and having a great summer. The air quality in Colorado has been poor due to the forest fires throughout the Southwest these past few months. When this happens it is not unusual to find more toxic metals on patients than usual as the mercury, arsenic, etc. released by coal burning power plants settles in the soil and is taken up by the trees. When the trees burn, the metals are released. Also, even with the extreme dryness/drought we are still seeing lots of fungal dysbiosis. People that have been dysbiosis free for years have been coming down with it. In many ways our disregard for environmental issues is coming back to haunt us so to speak. As a result we are seeing more dysbiosis, metal and chemical toxicity, hormone and neurotransmitter imbalances, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, etc. I feel especially sorry for the children brought up on junk food, chemical exposure in the classroom and home, unnecessary antibiotics, massive EMF exposure (TV, video games, etc.), playing on lawns treated with 2,4D. No wonder so many "need" to be medicated for behavioral problems. Even those brought up relatively carefully seem to suffer from more maladies than the previous generation.

It is so important for all of us to make sure we do not neglect the basics: eating whole, pure food, outdoor exercise, lots of pure water, taking the appropriate nutrients, proper light, etc. Those of us that can now say we are "middle age" have to be even more careful as I and others can attest to.

Case History

This case history was submitted by Lewis Cone DC of Plano TX:

Melissa, a young woman in her early 30's came to see me complaining of various aches from injuries and also complaining of severe menstrual symptoms and low energy.

Upon screening her for possible problems we found she needed SF722, Omega Plus (both Thorne Research 1-800-228-1966), an "anti-yeast" diet for 3 weeks, and had food "allergies" to beef and lettuce. She confided to me that these two foods were the ones that she ate the most often. We desensitized her and worked on her muscles with AK testing and origin/insertion work.

She returned after 3 weeks and felt somewhat more energy but her menstrual cramps were as bad as ever. She tested to be "finished" with her yeast infection and so we discontinued her SF722. She no longer tested sensitive to any foods. She tested to have "severe" toxic metals and insecticides affecting her body, especially her thyroid gland. Her thyroid gland also therapy localized. We tested Melissa for possible detoxing agents but none of the normal support worked (Thiocid, vitamin C, Captomer, etc.). We continued searching for an agent that would negate her weakness caused by her toxic metals. We finally found it with the mineral formula TraceMins (Thorne). Although this seemed like an unlikely detox agent I gave it to her to try. (Dr. Lebowitz's comment-actually we find this occasionally too and with minerals in it like molybdenum, zinc, etc. it does have good chelating potential).

Three weeks later Melissa returned and said she felt like a new woman. The first week she felt like she was run over by a truck with low energy, a productive cough, lots of mucus in her throat originating near her thyroid gland. Melissa reported now that her menstruation was extremely mild. She normally has fainting, extreme pain, low energy, and moodiness. This time she had no problems except very mild cramping. She now wakes up fully alert and energetic after only 5 hours of sleep. She still feels like she has a somewhat higher mucus content in her throat. Upon re-checking her, she now tested to be detoxifying different metals (this is not unusual- M.L.) (arsenic, cadmium, and tin) and also TraceMins was the agent to support her. We continue to support her detoxing metals but most of her symptoms are gone.

I just mention this case because it always surprises me how different patients can be from one another. Melissa responded dramatically to a simple mineral formula which no textbook would ever classify as a detoxification support. I love muscle testing. (Dr. Lebowitz's comments- This was a great case but if Dr. Cone had not cleared dysbiosis and food sensitivities first I doubt the same results would have been achieved. I applaud him for a job well done. He can be reached at): lew1ps@ont.com.

SPECIAL OFFER

As you know we are selling our spring 2002 Denver seminar on VHS and DVD and it may have been our best seminar ever (see page 4 for ordering). We still have copies of our spring 2001 NYC seminar available on VHS. We are cutting our price by about 60% on these while supplies last. Once sold out we will not make new copies of the NYC seminar. Every seminar I teach with Dr Jay Wilson covers our whole protocol and can be applied to most patients. Each year there are some modifications and upgrades from the previous year as we study and do more research though the foundation and most of the protocol remains constant (because it works very well). If you are on a tight budget or just don't want to spend full price for one of our seminars ($225 VHS, $250 DVD), I suggest getting the NYC seminar. It is $105 ppd. while supplies last. I suggest calling to reserve a copy and then sending your check to us. It comes with a complete set of notes and about 5 hours of video.

Study links ovarian cancer, use of estrogen -- by THE BOSTON GLOBE

In a news assault on the practice of long-term hormone use, a National Cancer Institute study published today found that women who took estrogen were significantly more likely to develop ovarian cancer than those not on the hormone.

The finding marks another setback for hormone replacement therapy, with pills once hailed for their youth-preserving quality now implicated as a cause of potentially fatal illness.

The new study tracked thousands of women for nearly two decades, finding that women who took estrogen were, on average, one-and-a-half times more likely to develop ovarian cancer, a particularly lethal form of cancer. That risk soared the longer a woman took the medicine: Women on estrogen for 20 years or beyond were three times more likely to develop ovarian cancer than those who did not take the pills.

The report in today's Journal of the American Medical Association comes one week after federal authorities halted another study of hormone replacement therapy after research showed that the pills were doing more harm than good, even causing conditions the medicine was once believed to prevent, including heart disease. That study looked at women who took a combination of two hormones, estrogen and progestin.

"This is just further fuel for the fire," said Dr JoAnn Manson, chief of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital. "This study provides further concerns about long-term use of hormone replacement therapy."

Hormones bombshell stuns millions -- by NEW YORK TIMES NEWS SERVICE

The announcement that a hormone replacement regimen taken by 6 million American women did more harm that good was met with puzzlement and disbelief Tuesday by women and their doctors across the country.

The rigorous study found that the drugs, a combination of estrogen and progestin, caused small increases in breast cancer, heart attacks and strokes, and blood clots. Those risks outweighed the drugs' benefits, a small decrease in hip fractures and a decrease in colorectal cancer.

Many of the 16,000 women in the study supported by the National Institutes of Health received letters Tuesday telling them to stop taking their drugs. In light of the findings, the study came to a sudden halt.

Hearing the news, some women said the new study prompted them to stop the hormone therapy.

"I may have taken my last pill this morning," said Dr Deborah Bublitz, a pediatrician in Littleton.

Others agonized over the consequences of suddenly stopping. Would they have to suffer through torrential night sweats and embarrassing hot flashes? Or were the scientists simply exaggerating the risks, which were, after all, minuscule for an individual woman? Until recently, medical authorities were telling doctors to encourage almost ever woman to start taking the drugs, a combination of estrogen and progestin, when she reached menopause and to take them for years, even for life.

Now the growing consensus seems to be that women should carefully consider whether they want to start taking the drugs at all. Those who take them for more than a few years -- they prevent bone loss and relieve menopause symptoms - should be aware of their risks which, though slight, also are real.

CORRECTING CHRONIC HEALTH PROBLEMS

DENVER COLORADO VIDEO/DVD SUNDAY, MAY 5, 2002

Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce the availability of the seminar I co-taught with Jay Wilson DC at the Red Lion Hotel, Denver, CO on Sunday, May 5, 2002.

This video or DVD will teach the physician a simple to apply, effective protocol to treat patients with chronic fatigue, allergies, chemical sensitivities, intestinal dysbiosis (fungal, bacterial, parasitic and viral infections), food sensitivities, altered intestinal permeability, toxic metal problems, adrenal and endocrine dysfunction, lymphatic dysfunction, nutritional imbalances, and chronic subluxations. This will help people with most chronic diseases including headaches, arthritis, auto-immune diseases, gastrointestinal problems, chronic pain, depression, memory lapses and many other problems. A knowledge of basic muscle testing is helpful. The seminar is geared to both the beginning and advanced practitioner and will be a balanced blend of both academics and techniques that you can apply right away. For those of you that have been to previous seminars this will have all the essential basic and advanced techniques as well as enough new information (academic and clinical) to make it worthwhile to watch including finding "underlying layers" quickly and easily that often elude our testing. Easy, accurate screening techniques and desensitizations are taught along with the highest quality nutritional products and the pros and cons of all available lab screenings. There is no hype and no expensive instruments necessary to apply these techniques.

Dr. Lebowitz is a DC practicing in Grand Junction, CO specializing in chronically allergic and fatigued patients. He is a researcher in AK, has written two books, numerous articles and has been the recipient of two awards from ICAK. His techniques are used by hundreds of doctors worldwide.

Jay Wilson, DC, has taught postgraduate courses nationally in clinical nutrition, dysbiosis, herbal medicine and clinical kinesiology.
