Dear Colleagues:

Also available on the site is Clinical Indications of Thorne Research Products (a 28 page handout), info on one on one seminars, phone numbers of other suppliers I use etc. It is worth spending a few minutes to check it out.
Interesting Health Info in the News
- A new book by Steven Johnson called Mind Wide Open explores the role of dopamine and happiness and how it is released based on expectations (if something better than you expected happens). I haven’t read the book yet but it sounds like we can take the information and based on the dopamine pathways we are aware of and other emotional modifying techniques we know, perhaps come up with an effective technique to add to our already existing ones. If you read it, let me know what you think.
- A study done recently by Dr. Bruce Rosen of Harvard Medical School utilizing MRI showed changes in blood flow to areas of the brain that control pain when acupuncture was applied to points on the hand related to pain relief. This is another of many studies validating different techniques that we all know work but did not understand the mechanisms behind them.
- Another recent study showed that homes with higher levels of airborne molds were associated with higher rates of lower respiratory infection in children (I am not sure why they study such obvious stuff).
- A scientist from Manitoba warned that mixing sunscreen and DEET, which I am sure many people do that apply both sunscreen and insect repellant, can increase side effects of DEET. He recommends applying sunscreen first, waiting 30 minutes and then using an insect repellent. Most of you are aware there are herbal alternatives to DEET and that sunscreen will vary in toxicity (labels should be read carefully).

3. I recently spent some time with some minor league baseball players I know as well as talking to a strength and conditioning coach for the Chicago Cubs minor league system. Because of the recent information of the use/abuse of steroids, testosterone precursors, HGH etc. in major league baseball as well as other sports, some teams are going too far in their response. The Cubs strength and conditioning man told me they can no longer give protein drinks or bars or recommend any vitamin or mineral to the players and the players are advised to take nothing. The team hires someone to come in to tell them to eat more fruits and vegetables and that is about it. I said “if a player is getting muscle cramps, can you recommend a mineral like calcium?” He replied he couldn’t. He thinks this is temporary. Also talking to the players (both of whom were suffering from muscle injuries), I was disturbed how little they knew or were advised about nutrition. We could do so much for these guys in terms of injury prevention, speeding recovery etc. if it weren’t for the politics and ignorance of those in charge. I was recently contacted by the head physician of the Colorado Avalanche NHL team who wanted to know exactly what I was doing in my treatment of one of their players. It actually turned in to a very nice conversation and he showed interest in having me train some of their staff in some basic muscle testing. We shall see.
CASE HISTORY
1. Carter is a seventeen pound, ten month old boy. He presented with a bright red rash on both cheeks and legs. It did not itch. Using surrogate testing and our test vials, he was positive on the composites for protozoa, virus, and Industrial and Environmental Chemicals (Test Kit Consultants 1-970-243-0477). Positive foods were gluten and bakers yeast. We supplemented with Arabinex, molybdenum picolinate (Thorne 1-800-228-1966) and Black Walnut Tincture. My “gut” suspicion was that the chemicals were the major factor and further testing showed a positive test for chlorine. Carter’s mom said they drink bottled water and don’t add bleach to their laundry but he bathes in municipal water. I instructed her to filter the bathing water. Their was no “smoking gun” so to speak so we waited to see what would happen. Three days later I was informed that the mom just remembered that a few days prior to the onset of the rash, they had found Carter playing in some liquid they later identified to be Clorox! Needless to say they were impressed with our diagnostic skills and the rash cleared speedily. (Don’t you love these kind of cases).
